I first came to McKinsey by accident when the company provided an internship programme at my university. Coming in, I didn't know what to expect, but I did want to develop and test my abilities outside an academic setting. It turned out to be a wholly positive experience - as time passed and I became ready, I was given more and more responsibilities. In a very organic manner, my colleagues passed their knowledge and skills onto me and I found it really satisfying! Eventually I was offered a full-time position and became an independent employee, paying forward what I'd learned.
The most enjoyable aspect of my role as an intern was the ability to provide real help and make a real impact on my colleagues' work. I felt I was really part of the team, making a genuine contribution and taking on more duties when I could. This way I became a valuable employee and paved the way to working full-time as soon as I finished my studies.
I decided to stay with McKinsey mostly because it is such a stimulating environment. I never get bored with my job, the Firm is constantly changing and there is always plenty to do! I am also given a lot of room to grow, supported in developing my skills as well as following my own interests.
I started out as an intern with no experience, and today I'm an accountant and training coordinator, I have several courses under my belt, and I can teach others. My advice? Just give it a shot – I assure you, you'll love to stay!
